Ron Hoover was born in Oakville, ON and he played Junior B hockey with the Oakville Blades in the 1983/84 season until a move up to Junior A and the Richmond Hill Dynes. Hoover returned to the Blades for the 1984/85 season. In the 1984 OHL Selection, Hoover was drafted in round 15, 217th overall by Belleville. He was drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, round 8, 158th overall.

Hoover attended Western Michigan University in the fall of 1985, and played hockey for the school until graduation in 1989. In 1988, he was chosen to the CCHA Second All-Star Team after scoring 39 goals in 42 games. After graduation the left-winger started his pro career with the Maine Mariners (AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins), signing as a free agent. After playing 75 games with the Mariners, Hoover was called to Boston for 2 games. The following season (1990/91) saw Hoover starting with the Mariners, before being called up again to the Bruins after 62 games. He skated for 15 games with Boston, posting 8 points.

After a trade to the St. Louis Blues in 1991, Hoover started with their IHL team, the Peoria Rivermen. He saw action in only one game for the Blues, before returning to Peoria until the end of the 1995/96 season. After spending almost five years with Peoria (the Blues’ top farm club in the NHL) Hoover was one of the club’s most popular players.

Hoover was in the IHL for the following year as well, splitting his time between the Cincinnati Cyclones (NHL affiliate Florida Panthers) and the San Antonio Dragons (minor league affiliate Peoria). The 1997/98 season was split between the Brantford Smoke (UHL) and the San Antonio Dragons. After scoring only one goal in 21 games with San Antonio, Hoover retired shortly afterwards in 1998.
