Taking a step into unknown territory is intimidating for everyone, especially for athletes. Giving up something you're comfortable with and learning a completely new skill is one of the biggest risks you can take. However, succeeding at it makes it all worth it and is a result of hard work.
The Oakville Rangers proudly present the emergence of rising goalie talent, Soren Bhan, who has been tearing up U15 and U16 house league this season.
Bhan, a dedicated athlete, balances a rigorous schedule of 4-5 ice times per week while also participating in baseball as a catcher and occasional first baseman in the off-season. Despite his busy schedule, Bhan's passion for hockey led him to transition to the goalie position this season after playing as a player for 7-8 years.
Since making the switch, Bhan hasn't looked back and wouldn't have it any other way. "It's actually a lot better than I thought it was going to be," remarked Bhan about his transition.
"A month in, my team didn't have a goalie, so I decided to try it out." With support from the Oakville Rangers league, Bhan found himself equipped and trained to excel in his newfound position, ultimately discovering a deep enjoyment for goaltending.
With lots of admiration for NHL goaltenders, particularly Maple Leaf-era Frederik Andersen, Bhan's dedication to the sport and appreciation for goalie play fueled his desire to keep on improving.
For Bhan, his key achievements this season include an impressive performance in the Showdown In O-Town tournament, where his U-15 team reached the finals, with Bhan conceding only five goals in six games, including two shutouts. Of course, his other big
achievement was making the switch to goalie.
When asked about his influences, Bhan mentioned Vasilevskiy and Rask for their strong glove hands but emphasized the importance of maintaining personal style and confidence on the ice.
Offering advice to aspiring goalies, Bhan says, "Don't give up. If something bad is happening, don't let it get to your head, just shake it off and keep practicing, you'll get back into it eventually."
Acknowledging the role of his U15 coach, Chris Phillips, Bhan credits him for significant development in positioning and fundamental skills.
Soren Bhan's journey exemplifies the spirit of determination and passion within the Oakville Rangers community, showcasing the potential for excellence within the sport of hockey.
